“Alexander. I’d like a word. Do you have a moment?” Maksim asked from the threshold of the office Alec had been afforded on the executive level of the auction house. He was busy working through invoices and customs forms for a new exhibit.

“Of course sir.” He stood. “Ysa, would you mind?”

“Not at all Alec. I’ll stop in on Yulia and collect the initial appraisals for you to review.” She smiled politely. “Mr. Dragomir.” She nodded.

“Hello Ysabelle.”

Maksim stepped in and she closed the door behind her.

“You know Alexander, I am impressed with the professionalism of your personal staff. I of course expected as much from Ysabelle, she, having worked for Fiorenza for so long, but the others comport themselves equally well.”

“Thank you sir.”

“But that is not why I have come. Please sit.”

Alec waited for Maksim to be seated then followed suit.

“You’re familiar with Eduard and his lovely daughter Anya, yes?”

“I am, sir. He’s the  great grandson of your wife’s brother. I’m rather fond of little Anya. She’s a sweet girl. I’m told she’s shy but I find her to be quite friendly when I see her.”

“Yes, well you do have a charm about you Alexander.”

“That’s kind of you to say sir.” Alec bowed politely.

“And little Anya is not so little anymore. In fact she will be sixteen in a few weeks. You and Anastasiya did receive the invitation to her party, did you not?”

“Sixteen? I feel like it was only yesterday when I saw her wearing pigtails.” He flipped through the agenda on his desk. “I’m not seeing an entry on my calendar. It’s unusual for Ysa to make mistakes. Perhaps we weren’t invited?”

“I thought as much. You are most assuredly invited.” He shook his head. “Were I to guess, I’d say that my darling daughter received it and never mentioned it.”

“I don’t understand why sir.”

“No? You are familiar with my Anastasiya, yes?” He all but smirked.

“I can’t believe she’d be jealous of a young girl?” Alec answered.

“I can.” Maksim replied evenly.

“I’ll speak with Stasi sir. We of course will attend. I’ll call Eduard myself and apologize so there are no hurt feelings.”

“I’d appreciate that Alexander.” He paused and brought his hand to his chin in thought. He sighed before speaking again. “There is one more thing.”

“Yes sir.”

“Eduard is a very strict and traditional man. He keeps the old world Russian ways. Anya has not been allowed to date and her male acquaintances are few, limited to family and those of her father’s closer personal relationships. As such, she does not have anyone to escort her in when she is announced. She has asked if you might consider doing her the honor.”

“The honor would be mine sir. It’s the least I can do to make amends for our poor manners.”

You do not have poor manners Alexander. My daughter…”

“Must have made an honest mistake. I’ll explain everything to her.”

The elder vampire grinned. “Very well then.” Maksim stood and Alec did as well. “I do appreciate this Alexander.”

“It’s nothing sir.”

He chuckled. “You haven’t told Anastasiya yet. I’d be curious to know if it’s still nothing after you do.” He winked and left.

Alec slumped into his chair and loosened his tie for air. “She’s going to kill me.”

…………………..

A few hours later….

“What do you mean you said yes?!” Her eyes were a raging conflagration of fury. “There is a reason that the invitation was misplaced. I’ll not have some young shlyukha crawling all over you Alec!”

“She’s your cousin Stasi, and just turning sixteen.” He said with more than a little shock at her explosive reaction.

“In Russia, many girls are married and have children by sixteen. She is as much an adult as I am!”

“You can’t mean to compare her to the woman you are, Stasi. Honestly. Do you really expect I’d have interest in a child? We’re in America, not Russia. We don’t do that here. Besides, you’ll be with me the entire time.”

“Hardly the entire time Alec! You’d be alone with her in the bridal suite prior to walking her in and I’m sure the devious little brodyaga will find other ways to separate us. She’s probably planning to steal you away from me already.”

“Really Stasi?” He asked incredulously. “Do you think so little of me that you believe I’d have any interest in such a young girl? Do you for a moment believe that I’d disrespect you and your father… not to mention your uncle… by acting in any way inappropriate with little Anya, a girl that is so incredibly shy and reserved that she hardly speaks when strangers are around? You do understand that the only reason her overly strict father has agreed to allow me to escort her, is because of you and our attachment. He understands what you mean to me and knows that I see his daughter as no more than a baby sister. He expects I will protect her and chaperone her while she is in the company of the few other boys invited to the party. I would not disappoint him any more than I would you, moye serdtse.”

Anastasiya still wore a resentful scowl, though softer than when the conversation had begun.

“You know she looks up to you, Stasi. You have such a regal demeanor, commanding presence, confidence and effortless grace… Anya has mentioned on more than one occasion that she aspires to be more like you when she grows up. I was hoping that perhaps you might agree to take her shopping. I mean who would be better suited to guide her into the perfect gown. You’ve been dressing me for years and have as keen an eye for fashion as any Toreador I’ve met. Not to mention it would do her well to see how a true lady conducts herself.”

His sire held his gaze, measuring his words, considering them carefully.

“I could have Ysa make the arrangements. If you’d be more comfortable, we could both go. I’m thinking we take her out for the evening so she could see how devoted and attentive I am to you. It would be a good lesson to learn what to expect of future suitors, for when she’s older of course.”

“Hmm. This could be a good thing… provided you do not disappoint me Alec. You know how patient I’ve been with you lately. I think I’m due some spoiling myself. If we are going to attend this affair then I’ll be wanting a new dress myself.”

“Without question.” Alec smiled.

“And coordinating jewelry.” A wicked grin formed on her face. “My agreement is going to cost you.”

“I would never think to put a price on your favor moye serdtse.”

“It’s not the expenditure of your wealth that I covet.”

“Oh I know my dearest Nastya. But my affections are already yours so in a sense, I’m the one benefitting from your generosity.”

Anastasiya smiled. “It’s settled then Alec. We will go to the party and as a show of love for my cousin we will allow her to accompany us while you take me shopping.”

“Thank you Stasi. You are always so kind.”

She grinned. “It might be a good idea to suggest to Anya that she should be on her best behavior.”

“I’m certain she will.”

“And you will be mindful of your place at my side.” She said, drawing her arms around his shoulders.

“How could I ever forget.”

“You always manage to draw upon my softness for you Alexander.” She kissed him. “Do not take advantage of my good nature.” She added biting his lower lip.

He could taste the blood in his mouth. “I wouldn’t dare to dream of it.”

She licked the blood oozing from the small cut. “Good. Let me know the particulars once you’ve settled them.”

“I will moye serdtse.” He hugged her close. “Thanks Stasi.”

She closed her eyes and laid her head upon his shoulder, oblivious to the uncomfortable expression on his face.

Ysa pulled the black Bentley Bentayga into the circular driveway of the Brooklyn residence. She dutifully exited the vehicle and opened the door for her passengers. Alec stepped out first, surveyed the area then extended his hand to assist Anastasiya from the vehicle maintaining her modesty as best as her tightly wrapped dress would allow.

“After you, my heart.” Alec offered, leading her forward.

“I’ll keep her running, Alec.” Ysa advised.

“Gracias Ysa.”

As they approached the door it opened. They were greeted by a middle aged man, near forty, Alec would have guessed, wearing a tailored dark suit with a red shirt and tie.

“Dobro pozhalovatʹ.” (Welcome) He said with a broad smile. “Please. Come in.”

Alec entered through the doorway first then led Anastasiya in by hand, allowing her to step in front of him as if he were presenting her.

“Hello Anastasiya.” The man greeted her with a kiss on both of her cheeks. “You are as beautiful as ever, my sweet.”

“Spasibo dyadya.” (Thank you uncle) She replied with a polite smile.

“Alexander.” The man smiled even wider. “I must thank you for all you are doing for my little Anya.”

“It’s our pleasure sir. When my Stasi heard about the party she was so excited that she insisted that she be allowed to take her shopping. How can any man resist the kind suggestions of one so beautiful? I must apologize though sir that the invitation was mishandled. I’ve counseled my staff that such errors are unacceptable.”

“Do not fret about such a little thing, Alexander. You have done more for my little Anya than any father could hope. And please, call me Eduard.”

“Thank you sir.”

“My Alec is always so polite, uncle.” She forced an uncomfortable grin.

Alec reached for her hand and laced her fingers with his. “It’s all Anastasiya sir. I take all my cues from her.” He brought her fingers to his lips and kissed them.

Anastasiya began to soften again until…

“Alec!” Anya screeched from the top of the stairwell.

She raced down excitedly but slowed to a quick halt as her eyes met Anastasiya’s cold glare. The young girl quickly composed herself and did as Alec had instructed her.

“Hello cousin.” She smiled affectionately. “I’m so very excited to be going out with you. I can’t tell you how grateful I am to you for inviting me.” She hugged her tight and kissed her cheek. As she did she stole a look at Alec who nodded nearly imperceptibly.

Anastasiya, who had tensed, relaxed again. “It’s my pleasure Little Anya.”

“Hello Alec.” She said with a slight blush. She offered him a quick hug and peck on the cheek then quickly moved away from him to stand on Anastasiya’s left.

The vampire seemed to approve. “I’ve selected some fabulous establishments that will only be open to us. Alec is well connected and the proprietors were more than happy to accommodate us. I’ve no doubt that we’ll find you a lovely dress. Two perhaps. A gown to walk in and a cocktail dress to you know… party.” She smiled lightly. “If you approve of course uncle.”

“Anastasiya my darling niece, you spoil her. If that is your wish then I can only say thank you.”

“It’s settled then. Alec, how about we begin at Dior?”

“An excellent choice, my heart. Shall we?”

Ysa was listening to the entire conversation through Alec’s earpiece. She was already waiting beside the door when the three of them exited the house. Ysa opened the vehicle door as they approached and Anastasiya motioned for the girl to get in. Alec assisted Anastasiya in before closing the door.

“So far so good mijo.” Ysa said.

“It’s early mijá.” He smirked back, opening the passenger front door.

“You sure you want to sit with the driver Alec?” Anastasiya asked.

“For now Stasi. It’s a day for you two ladies to enjoy. I’m just along for the ride.”

“And to pay. Let’s not forget that.” Anastasiya laughed, playfully nudging Anya who chuckled politely at the joke.

“Stasi.” Anya said. “I like it. It sounds so sweet when he calls you that cousin.”

“Yes. I’ve grown to like it myself.”

“How did you and Alec meet?” She asked innocently.

Ysa cocked an eyebrow at the question, curious to hear what she would say.

“He worked for my father, you know. Still does. Alec has an eye for the finer things. It’s no wonder that I caught his attention. He started out as an appraiser, not an exceptionally high paying job but my father was quite generous with him.”

“Very true Stasi.” Alec agreed. “Mr. Dragomir is very good to me.”

“Well I work at the auction house too though typically I’m far too busy to notice lower level employees. Even so, Alec I thought was kind of cute.”

“He is quite cute, Stasi. May I call you Stasi?”

Anastasiya was already side-eying Alec who nodded at her.

“Sure. Why not? We are family after all. Yes?” She looked at Alec who was watching her through the rear view mirror and he winked at her. “So some time passed and though I showed very little interest in him, he was obviously quite infatuated with me. Alec always seemed to be at places I was. And not only at work. Restaurants, clubs, boutiques. If I didn’t know any better I’d have thought he was stalking me.” She said as a mischievous grin played across her face. “Normally I’d never think to go out on a date with an employee but he was quite persistent and your Uncle Maksim appeared to be rather fond of him so I thought perhaps maybe he should be rewarded with the opportunity to take me out for dinner. Alec took me to a restaurant well above his means, I’m sure he chose it to impress me. We then went to a club that he would normally never make it past the door. In truth, we wouldn’t have been admitted except for the fact that I knew the owner. Alec quickly came to realize that all the good things he could have hoped for would come through me. I was cautious of his advances though. But after taking some time to get to know him, he’s won my heart. And now I love him more than anything else in this world. Almost as much as he loves me.” She smiled affectionately. “What can I say? He earned it.”

“Elena estaría vomitando.” (Elena would be puking) Ysa mumbled.

Anastasiya looked at Alec. “What did she say?”

“She said Ellie’s not feeling well.”

“Oh” Anastasiya shrugged indifferently.

“You’re lucky.” Anya rolled her eyes. “I’m never going to be allowed to date… let alone fall in love. I could be in my twenties like you and my father still will be strict with me.”

“I’m sure one day you’ll meet a nice boy.” Alec offered in consolation. “One who will deserve you.”

“Maybe.” She smiled back. “One day.”

Ysa parked in front of the boutique where the manager was waiting for them.

“Ahh Mr. and Mrs. Dragomir. My name is Madame Inessa Vasiliev. How nice of you you come. And who is this lovely child? Your sister perhaps?” She asked Anastasiya.

“Cousin actually. She’s going to be sixteen soon.” Alec replied.

“Ah yes. Miss Sáenz mentioned as much when she set the appointment. Come in. I have some amazing selections I’m certain you will love.”

Anya was awestruck with the boutique. The front room was quite spacious for a New York City shop. Several pricey gowns were displayed on full model mannequins. Off to the side there was an entire wall shelved with designer shoes.

“Whoah.” Anya gasped. “I thought we were going to Bloomingdales.”

Alec laughed. “My sweet Stasi thought we could do better than that for such a special occasion, right moye serdtse?”

“Without a doubt, Alec.”

“If you’ll follow me…” The owner bowed, leading them to a second even larger space where there was a platform set in front of a massive mirror with couches framing the outside of the perimeter. Rows of dresses filled a back section and there was a well lit dressing room to the side. There were two racks of ball gowns and cocktail dresses prepared with selections Inessa had made prior to their arrival.

“Everything is custom tailored for the perfect fit. Who would like to go first?”

Alec looked at Anastasiya.

“Go on cousin.” She urged as she sat next to Alec on a couch. “It’s your night.” Her hand found the inside of his thigh.

The girl gushed with excitement as Madame Inessa accompanied her to try on the first dress.

“That was good of you, Stasi.” He leaned in and kissed her. “Thank you.”

“You can thank me later.” She smirked, squeezing his thigh.

Anya returned wearing a deep pink gown, shaped like a bell, layered in frilly lace. It’s bustier laced tightly into her small frame. The fabric glittered with hundreds of Swarovski crystals sewn in a pattern radiating out to the widening edges of the dress.

“This is a similar gown to the one we made custom for Lady Rowena Aquino of the Philippines. She wore it at the inauguration ball of her aunt who had been elected president. I say similar because these are both unique pieces.” Madame Vasiliev explained.

“What do you think, Stasi?” Anya asked excitedly, obviously seeking the approval of her cousin.

Anastasiya approached the girl and had her twirl slowly. “The lacing is intricate and beautiful. The crystals catch the light perfectly as if you were being showered in hundreds of princess cut diamonds. The color is deep and vibrant but not harsh or bright. Your father will say the bustier is too tight and shows a little too much of your ladylike figure but…” She ran her fingers along the lines of the fabric. “…I think it accentuates your shape just enough. Normally I would never advise buying the first dress you try on but…”

“Oh Stasi. I love it.”

“It’s settled then I think. You look lovely Anya. You’re sure to draw almost every eye in the room.” She looked back at Alec who seemed more focused on Anastasiya’s opinion than the dress itself. That made her smile. “Almost every eye.” She repeated as Alec winked at her.

“Should I ask what it costs?” Anya’s voice held a hint of nervousness.

Inessa Vasiliev cocked an eyebrow and looked at Alec.

“That won’t be necessary. We’ll take it. And I’m certain Madame Vasiliev has the perfect shoes in mind to accent it.”

The woman smiled. “I do. Do you intend for there to be a flats to heels ceremony?” She asked.

Anya’s eyes had brightened but she didn’t speak.

“I should think so. I know my sweet Anastasiya would want nothing less for her dearest cousin.”

“Wonderful Mr. Dragomir. I’ve got the perfect shoes in mind. Both Salvatore Ferragamo designs.”

While Anya waited, she moved mirror to mirror, testing angles and mugging in her reflections. She took pictures of her impromptu modeling on her phone then giddily sent them to her two best friends. The sounds of instagram pings followed fast and furiously. Alec was careful to avoid being in any of the shots or mirrored reflections.

Anastasiya had moved away from the girl and was looking at a rack of cocktail dresses of varying shapes and length in multitudes of colors, each extravagant as it was sensuous. The one commonality among them all was the certainty of form fitting design.

Inessa returned with the shoes allowing an assistant to tend to Anya. “Do you have a favorite color Mrs. Dragomir?

“I’ve always liked black for its classic aesthetic and red for those more attention seeking nights. Blue is nice…”

“Would you consider green? I think the color would play so nicely with your skin tone and your eyes, as beautiful as they are, would just pop.”

She reached for a dress that was cut to just above mid thigh with clear and black Swarovski crystal stone work that was both ethereal and elegant.

Alec had stepped behind her placing his hands around her waist, resting on her hips. “I’d love to see how your natural beauty transforms the dress, Stasi. Madame Vasiliev is correct. The color favors you.”

“But of course Alec. I wouldn’t deprive you of the enjoyment.”

Anastasiya disappeared into a dressing room with Madame Vasiliev. Anya had wandered back over to where he stood.

“There’s no prices on anything Alec. Are you sure you won’t be spending too much?”

He grinned. “I’m sure. Consider all this part of your gift from us. The next shop will be a gift from me. As your escort I’d like for you to have a memento of the evening… to remember me when you are older and all the boys are chasing after you.

She laughed. “I don’t know about that. But I do know I’ll never forget you.” She hugged him and kissed him gently on the cheek. “Thank you Alec.”

“You’re welcome, Anya.” He looked toward the dressing room, his enhanced hearing had informed him they were just about to exit. He took a step away from her. “Are they comfortable? They look fabulous.”

“Alec?” Anastasiya called to him.

He turned and blinked. “Whoah.”

“You like it Alec?” She asked as spun, keeping her eyes on him.’’

“Yes. You’re absolutely enchanting. Were I not already bewitched by your beauty I would be now.”

“Wow Stasi!” Anya squealed. “You’re stunning! Be careful Alec, we know who’s turning every head now. Don’t we?”

Anastasiya smiled. “Alec needn’t worry, Anya. Everyone knows he’s with me.”

“Is that a yes Mrs. Dragomir?”

“Alec?”

“It’s certainly a yes for me.”

“Me too.” Anya emphasized.

“I guess it is. Nicely done Inessa.”

“Thank you ma’am. I know just the shoes too. Open toe, spiked heel and a sparkle of crystals. I’ll be right back.

Anastasiya admired herself in the mirror. “We’re going to need complimenting sets of jewelry too Alexander.”

“That’s our next stop moye serdtse.”

Anastasiya provocatively sashayed her way to him, grabbed him by the jaw and kissed him passionately.

“Excellent.”

“Now young lady…” Madame Vasiliev redirected Anya from the overly showy public display of affection. “I believe you too will need a cocktail dress. Blue… for your icy colored eyes… or perhaps red the darker, more womanly transition from pink to mark your passage into adulthood.”

…………………..

“You didn’t need to buy both the red and blue dresses Alec.” Anya said as the suv turned onto the road.

“Of course he did. That is how he was raised. Am I right lyubovnik?” Anastasiya said.

“It is. A lady should never be left wanting when out with a gentleman.”

“A good lesson to learn, Anya.” Anastasiya reached forward and squeezed Alec’s arm. “Accept no treatment from a man that is any worse than your father would treat you. Or better yet, accept no treatment that is any less than my Alec treats me.”

Alec smiled warmly at the two of them.

“Miss Dragomir is quite right, chica. Look to Alec if you want to learn how a good man treats people.”

Alec winked and Anya smiled.

“Ysa how are we for time?” Alec asked.

“We’re a bit early. The dress shopping was quicker than I anticipated.”

“Yes. Me too. Anastasiya interjected. “Anya and I both were drawn to some of the first items we saw.”

“Are you hungry Anya?”

“A little. But I wouldn’t want you to go out of your way.”

“Nonsense. We all understand the uncomfortable feeling hunger can cause. I know a place that you’ll enjoy.” He turned his attention to Ysa. “Sant’Ambroeus Ysa, para un cafecito y tortas.” (espresso and cakes)

“Bueno.”

A few minutes later the car took a turn and stopped in front of a very exclusive looking Italian cafe. There was a line of people waiting for tables.

“Looks crowded Alec.” Anya said with a hint of disappointment.

“Nonsense. I’m sure they can accommodate us.” He exited the car. “Wait here I’ll be right back.”

Ysa stepped out and opened the door for Anastasiya and Anya. They had barely stood on the curb when Alec returned with a smile.

“Let’s go inside. They’re clearing a table.”

“Really?” Anya sounded surprised.

“The owner is a friend. I do business here quite often.”

The pretty young waitress smiled at Alec and then led them to a private table off to the side. It was set where very little traffic would pass yet they had a clear view of the room. She passed out menus and immediately Anastasiya set it down.

“Not hungry Stasi?” Anya asked.

“Not really.”

“I know what she likes.” Alec smiled as he placed his hand over Anastasiya’s.

The vampire smirked.

“Are you ready to order sir?”

“Si.” Alec answered and began speaking in Italian.

“The young lady will have a Cappuccino Viennese and could you bring an assortment of pastries and cakes. My lady would very much enjoy the Sangue Della Vite wine, the dark red if you’d be so kind.”

“Excellent choices sir, and for yourself?”

“The usual please Elisabetta. Oh and if you do me one other favor?”

He leaned in and whispered then pointed to the door.

“Of course Mr. Massara.”

She smiled and left. Elisabetta returned with a lovely smelling cappuccino steaming with a bouquet of chocolate and placed it in front of Anya along with a multitiered platter arranged with more cake and pastries than she could hope to eat in a month. The server carefully set a frosted crystal goblet in front of Anastasiya. “For the lady.” She bowed politely.

“What is this?” Anastasiya asked.

“A lovely bottling. Taste.”

Anastasiya raised the glass to her nose and could smell it was blood. She took a sip then raised it to Alec in appreciation.

“I’m glad it is to your liking, Miss. The server said before setting a rocks glass with amber liquid in front of Alec. “Enjoy sir.”

“Grazie Elisabetta.”

Anya watched the woman smile then depart heading directly for the door with an espresso and several pastries on a plate.

“That was kind of you to send something out for your driver, Alec.”

“Ysa is much more than a driver, Anya. She is an invaluable assistant and loyal friend to us both. Am I right, moye serdtse?”

“Yes. Of all your employees I think I dislike her least.”

Alec grinned and Anya laughed, taking the very real statement as a joke.

An hour later they were ready to leave. Elisabetta boxed the remaining pastries in several containers for Anya to take home. Alec paid in cash. Anya counted out twenty four hundred dollar bills and watched him fold the leather binder closed.

“The rest is for you Elisabetta.” He spoke in Italian.

“Grazie signor. Grazie.” She smiled and bowed.

He slipped another hundred to a bus boy who quickly raced outside and retrieved the cup and plates from Ysa.

“That was amazing Alec. I didn’t know you could speak Italian.”

“Alec speaks many languages.” Anastasiya said proudly. “I myself am the reason he learned Russian.”

“I’ve heard you speak Spanish to… Ysa is it?”

“Ysabelle.” Anastasiya corrected. “But yes.”

“Any others?”

“Arabic. Kimiko is teaching me Japanese and Chinese, Then maybe I’ll try my hand at Greek and Hebrew. It all helps with appraisals and authenticating rare pieces of art.”

“Kimiko?” Anastasiya asked suspiciously.

“Yeah. The pilot I hired.”

“I thought Elena was in school training to perform that function.”

“She is, but until she’s ready I need a pilot. Kimiko came highly recommended.”

“Wonderful.” Anastasiya seemed annoyed.

“I’m sure our next stop will cheer you up, my heart.”

Ysa turned into an underground garage, entered a key code and waited for the gate to rise.

“I assure you, the jewelry here is the finest in the city.”

“We’ll see.” Anastasiya answered with an air of stiffness.

Two armed men stood at a door to the underground entrance. Alec handed one of the men a business card. Anya watched as he nodded then opened the door for them.

The interior was a maze of glass cases displaying all manner of precious stones, rare metals and crafted set pieces. They were met immediately by an older man in a designer suit carrying a jewelers loupe.

“Mr. Dragomir. Welcome. I see you have brought your lovely Anastasiya. It is a pleasure to finally make your acquaintance. Alexander speaks so highly of you.”

“You recognize me?” She asked quizzically.

“Oh yes, Alexander always has a new picture of you to share when he comes. He says you bring him inspiration so he buys nothing without one in hand.”

Alec could see her soften again.

“That’s nice to hear…?”

“Arseny. Mrs. Dragomir. Arseny Asinov, at your service. And who is this pretty little sprite? Your sister perhaps?” He asked Anastasiya.

“Cousin.” Alec answered, “She’s going to be sixteen soon so we decided she should have a gift to mark the occasion.”

“Very generous of you sir. What did you have in mind?”

“I’d like a parure for each of my special ladies, one for my beautiful Anastasiya and one for her lovely cousin. Earrings, necklace, ring and bracelet.. Could you recommend something?” He began to share the pictures he had taken at the boutique.

“I must say sir, your wife is quite beautiful. She makes an old man’s job easy. I’m thinking… a platinum choker with white and black diamonds and some emeralds to draw color from her dress. I’ll match the rest for a complete look. Perhaps something like this?”

He brought them to a display with the most stunning set of diamond and emerald jewelry Anastasiya had ever seen.

“It’s perfect Alec.”

“Thank you Mrs. Dragomir. You honor me to say so. I myself craft all the set pieces. Now you my precious birthday girl, I would recommend clear diamonds, princess cut to sparkle but clean and tasteful so that no matter the dress, you will shine, platinum too of course. If you’d like I could do a ruby earring and sapphire earring as well for just a hint of color, to give you choices along with dresses.”

Anya looked at Alec. “That sounds expensive.”

“Not to worry Anya.” Anastasiya interrupted. “Alec does quite well financially.” She smirked.

“Remember what I said right? We want you to have this.” He winked.

She nodded. “Thank you Alec. Thank you Anastasiya.” She reached for her cousin and hugged her.

Anastasiya, though somewhat taken aback by the sudden show of affection, wore an expression of approval.

Their next stop was Louis Vuitton and after over an hour there, they arrived at their final destination for the night, a lingerie boutique that Alec recused himself from, handing his Mastercard to Anastasiya. “You’ll forgive me if I sit this one out will you? I think you ladies should handle this on your own.”

“Oh? Is my Alec shy?” Anastasiya teased.

“Let’s just say I’d rather be surprised.”

“Perfect.” She grinned, pressing her lips hard into his.

“Let’s go, Anya.”

The teen looked nervously back at Alec.

“I’ll be right here if you need me.”

She nodded and headed into the establishment with Anastasiya.

“Is that wise Alec? You trust her alone with the girl?”

“She has no reason to harm her cousin. That was the purpose of this. To set her at ease.”

“Cost you a small fortune.” Ysa shook her head.

“Money I can replace. Lives I cannot.”

I wasn’t patronizing you when I told her she could learn what a real man is by watching you. Thanks for the cafecito mijo.”

“Te nada mija.”

Alec focused his supernatural hearing into the boutique just to be sure Anastasiya was getting along well with her younger cousin. To his surprise they were. He even heard some laughing and giggling and more than a few embarrassing comments made by his sire. Nearly two hours later they came out smiling. It was nearly three in the morning and Anya looked exhausted.

“I think it’s time we take you home, Anya.”

She fought back a yawn. “I’m not tired.” She lied.

“I know, but your dad will be worried if we’re out too late.”

“You’re probably right.”

Ysa pulled the car into the circular driveway where their night had begun.

“I’ll see her in, if that’s ok Stasi?”

“Of course. I’ll be waiting here.”

“Good night Stasi.” Anya hugged her tight. “Thank you for everything. You’ve been so incredibly kind and generous.”

“You’re welcome, Anya.”

Alec assisted her to the door, helping to carry the parcels of shoes, handbags and lingerie along with the boxed pastries.

Anastasiya watched them walk, focusing her supernatural hearing to listen to the conversation.

“Ysa will call you when it’s time to try on the dresses, after the final alterations are done. If Stasi and I can make it we will but if not Ysa will keep you safe. I promise. I’ll speak to your father tomorrow about it. I’ll deliver the jewelry personally. It’s rather valuable and I wouldn’t trust a courier.”

“That’s very kind of you Alec. You’ve done so much for me. How can I ever thank you?”

“Just be the good girl we know you are. I’ll look forward to the party.”

They had stopped for just a moment at the door when it opened.

“Hello sir.” Alec greeted her father.

“My goodness Alexander. What have you done? Have you spent the whole night spoiling my little Anya?”

“And my Anastasiya.” He smiled.

“Here let me help you. Please come in.”

“Thank you sir.”

“Eduard, Alec, please call me Eduard.”

“I’ll try to remember that sir.”

“You see Anya. This is what manners look like.” He surveyed all the boxes and bags. “You should not have spent so much, Alexander. It wasn’t necessary.”

“Most of it was Stasi sir, the pastries were my idea.” He said politely.

“Where is Anastasiya?”

“It’s been a long night sir. She’s waiting in the car.”

“I understand. Well, please thank my niece for all her generosity.”

“I will sir. Get some rest Anya. We’ll talk again soon.”

“Ok.” She said through a yawn. “Thank you again for everything Alec.” She leaned in and kissed his cheek. “And please thank Stasi for me.”

“I will.”

“Stasi is it?” Her father asked. “Anastasiya, Anya. She is your older cousin. Show some respect.”

“It’s fine sir. Stasi said as much.”

“She’s too good that woman of yours Alexander. I will stop by the auction house tomorrow to thank her properly.”

“We’ll look forward to seeing you, sir.”

“Good night Alexander.”

“Good night sir.”

Alec made his way back to the car and sat in the back with Anastasiya.

“Well. What do you think?”

“You did well Alec. I’m happy that you did.”

She leaned her head against his shoulder.

“Me too.” He kissed her forehead but his eyes met Ysa’s in the mirror. She nodded and he was finally able to relax.

Alec arrived at the dock early. The party wasn’t to begin for another hour but he wanted to arrive before the guests so his people could board without drawing any attention. Alec wasn’t thrilled with the idea of the yacht venue but Anya had so desperately wanted to have the party here that Maksim could hardly say no to the girl. He, much like Alec, was rather fond of her and equally indulgent. Ysa parked the car and the two SuVs that had been trailing her pulled alongside. Elena hopped out of the Bentley and started issuing instructions to the security team. There were six thoroughly armed guards in tactical gear and two more discreetly outfitted in business attire. Alec could hear her running a coms check through his earpiece, then assigning them their posts. Once she was done briefing them they made way for their positions. The two in suits, a man in his late 20’s with dark, short cropped hair and a woman with black hair boasting purple highlights stood by the on ramp ready to check invitations.

“All set Alec.” She said leaning in through the open window of the door. Her hair was pulled back into a ponytail and she wore a knee length overcoat of light brushed wool, charcoal gray and black. “Kimiko is on standby with the helicopter just in case.”

“Thanks El. Make sure you find time to eat something. It’s going to be a long night.”

“You think they’ll have macaroni and cheese?”

“Probably mixed with lobster and some type of pretentious truffle oil.” Ysa suggested.

Alec smirked. “When Mr. Dragomir’s men arrive, coordinate with them Ellie, but keep our people on the dual band with a separate channel. Ivan should be here shortly.”

“Will do. I’m surprised Anastasiya allowed you to drive here yourself.” Elena said.

“She takes much longer to get ready than I do. Add to it, I had informed her I was handling security for the event and though she wasn;t happy, she didn’t argue about it either.”

“Well not as much as usual.” Ysa commented.

“I’ll take what concessions I can.” He exited the car. “Let’s go find Eduard and Anya.”

Ysabelle walked alongside Alec up the ramp and onto the ship. The Aqua Azul was as luxurious as you’d expect from what was considered the premier yacht in NYC. It boasted several decks. The top side level had been set up as like a nightclub with tables, bars and an expansive dance floor. It was sure to be an amazing night under the stars and Alec couldn’t help but think how Stefania would have loved the atmosphere for their wedding. CIty hall just didn’t share the same aesthetic beauty.

“Oye Lindo!” Ysa broke him from his momentary dream. “Are you listening to me Alec?”

“Oh. Sorry Ysa. I was…”

“I know. I’ve been with you long enough to recognize the Stefania stare.” She jabbed. “Shake it off. Here comes Anya.”

“Alec!” The teen bounded toward him and threw her arms around him squeezing him tight before just as quickly releasing him. “Is Stasi here?” She asked anxiously.

“Not yet.”

“Oh.” She looked relieved then hugged him again. “Hi Ysa.” She offered in a relaxed and friendly tone.

“Hi Anya.” She smiled. “Tiene cuidado con ella mijo. No quieres que tu novia loca vea eso.” She whispered to Alec.

“It’s fine Ysa.” He assured her. “Anya, why don’t you get ready? I’m going to find your father.”

“Ok Alec. I’ll be mid deck in the princess suite. Come find me later.” She smiled brightly and bounded away.

“That girl is gonna be trouble.”

Alec smiled. “For someone I’m sure. Not me. I have enough complications without the problem of an underage girl making my life more difficult.”

“Even so Alec. Be mindful of her exuberance when Anastasiya is around.”

“I will.”

They found Eduard sitting near a bar below deck, drinking vodka.

“Good evening sir. You remember Ysa, don’t you?”

“Hello sir.” The Mexican ghoul greeted him.

“Ah yes Alexander. Good evening Ysabelle. I can’t believe how ostentatious this vessel is. My brother in law certainly outdid himself. Both of you. It’s so kind of you to dote on my Anya such as you have. Maksim spoils her like his own. He’s always been quite generous with us… for as long as I can remember… even before my wife, his wife’s sister passed on. Here Alec. Have a drink. Both of you please.”

The bartender poured two glasses of vodka for them.

“To the eternal bonds of family. May they always remain strong. Na zdarovje.” (To your health)

He raised his glass and they did the same then emptied them.

“It is good vodka, yes!”

“It is sir.” Alec smiled.

Eduard grabbed him by the shoulders and shook him happily. “Eduard, Alec. You must call me Eduard.”

“I’ll try and remember that sir.”

“Ahh!” He laughed. “That is why my brother in law favors you, Alexander. Maksim is a man who values respect and good manners.”

“That he does sir.”

“Alec, Anastasiya has arrived.” Elena said into his earpiece.

“Thanks El.” He nodded to Ysa. “If you’ll excuse me sir. Stasi has just arrived. I should meet her.”

“Yes of course. By all means.”

Alec departed with Ysa and returned to the parking lot just as the limousine pulled up front. He opened the door and she smiled.

“Well hello Alec. I told pa pa you’d be here to meet me. I can only guess at how much it must have pained you to arrive alone.”

He extended his hand to ease her out. “It is true moye serdtse. I lament any time I am forced to be apart from you. That said, I am comfortable that you and your father shall enjoy a safe night about the yacht. Please allow me.”

She accepted his hand, stepping forward with a clear gem stoned spiked heel. The verdant green hem of her dress crept up to mid thigh as she moved forward. Once extricated from the vehicle she smoothed herself out then wrapped her arms around his neck, kissing him passionately.

“Do you like it?” She asked, taking a step back and turning just a bit.

“The color is amazing on you. You are so incredibly beautiful, my heart.”

Maksim had found his way out via the opposing door. “Is everything to your liking Alexander?” He asked.

Alec took another look at Anastasiya and smiled. “It most certainly is.” He grinned.

Maksim rolled his eyes and headed up the gangplank with Ivan a few feet behind.

Alec heard a heaving noise in his earpiece. “Don’t make me puke Alec.” Elena choked out.

Ysa smirked.

“Is something amusing Ysabelle?” Anastasiya asked with a frosty tone.

“No ma’am,” she corrected herself. “I was just admiring what a lovely couple you two make.”

More heaving.

Alec enhanced his eyesight and scanned the top of the ship. He could make out Elena with her eye pressed into the scope of her sniper rifle watching them. She wore the expression of a cat who had just coughed up a hairball.

“I agree.” He smiled and kissed Anastasiya on her cheek. “Shall we?”

As they reached the top of the walkway more and more cars filed into the dockside parking lot. Guests numbering in the hundreds, two perhaps even three, boarded and were directed to the interior dining area for cocktails and appetizers. A live band played as partygoers talked and mingled.

“Anastasiya!” An older woman wearing an elegant gown and gaudy jewelry called to her in Russian. “How beautiful you look!”

“Varvara. How nice to see you.”

Alec knew it was a lie. He knew a fake smile when he saw one.

“And who do we have here? Is the man who is all the talk at the tea house?” Her eyes looked Alec up and down. “The one you bewitched?” She added playfully.

Anastasiya was far from amused.

“What do you mean bewitched?” She asked as her expression hardened.

“I’m sure what she’s referring to is how enchanting and lovely you are. It’s no secret that I’ve fallen under the spell of your ethereal beauty moye serdtse. Who in their right mind could resist you. I’m sure greater men than me have vied for your favor. I’m just fortunate that you chose me.” He kissed her cheek. “Purely complimentary my love.” He added.

Anastasiya softened a bit.

“Oh but of course darling. I would never insult such a sweet girl.” She turned her attention to Alec. “So you’re Alexander. I’ve heard so much about you. It appears the stories are all true. It is a pleasure to meet you, put a face to a name so to speak.”

“I’m not sure I’ve done anything worth talking about but thank you. And please call me Alec, Miss…”

“Maksim said you were polite… and modest. Varvara Alec.” She reached out her hand.

Alec took her palm into his own and lightly kissed her fingertips.

My Alec.” Anastasiya emphasized possessively.

“Oh that’s no secret Anastasiya. If you’ll allow an old woman, he is quite charming. You’ve done well for yourself, dear girl.”

“I would say I’ve done better.” Alec smiled.

“Yes. I suspect you would. Perhaps we could catch up later and talk some more?”

“I’d enjoy that.” Alec answered politely

She looked him over again. “Yes. I believe you would.”

“Vedʹma.” (Witch) Anastasiya hissed as the old woman walked away.

“It’s ok Stasi. Please don’t allow something so small to ruin your night. It seems we get so few of these social opportunities to enjoy together.”

“You’re right Alec.” She squeezed his hand. “Let’s find our table.”

About an hour later a maitre d approached. “Mr. Dragomir. They’re looking for you in the princess suite. It’s nearly time.”

“Thank you.” He leaned into Anastasiya. If you’ll excuse me.”

She grabbed him by the tie and kissed him. “I’ll be right here waiting.”

He nodded and followed the man to the suite. Inside Alec found a room of giggling teenage girls and several boys sitting awkwardly off to the side. Only a few of the young men were brave enough to mingle with their partners.

“Alec!” Anya beamed as she rushed him. Some of the girls blushed while others stared.

“Privet moy dragotsennyy.” (Hello my precious) He said smiling as he hugged her. You look Beautiful Anya. That ball gown really gives you the princess look you so deserve.” Alec brushed a pink lock of hair away from her face. “Your father let you do this?” He teased her.

“Just the piece.” She blushed.  “To match my dress.”

“It’s adorable, snowflake.”

“Will you help me with my necklace?”

“Of course.” She handed him the diamond choker then spun around. Alec gently placed it around her throat then clasped it securely. “There. Now you’re perfect.”

“Where can I get a cousin like that?!” One of the girls laughed and started giggling.

“Don’t be jealous, Larisa.” Anya smirked back. “But this one is taken.” She laced her arm through his and squeezed.

“Ready?” the maitre D asked.

Anya took a deep breath and nodded.

Anya’s court was announced first. Eight couples were introduced to excited applause. Anya’s father was introduced next. Eduard looked quite sharp in the custom suit Maksim had tailored for him. He walked to stand beside his brother in law and Anastasiya. At last it was Anya’s turn. She stood nervously outside the double door separating her from the guests in the mid deck ballroom. Alec could sense her anxiety.

“You ok?”

“What if I trip Alec? What if everyone laughs. What if…”

“Relax Anya. You will walk in with the grace of a ballerina and the poise of a princess.”

Her eyes blinked as the power of his blood took hold of her.

“And now the moment you’ve all been waiting for. Our beautiful Birthday Girl, Anya Petrova accompanied by her escort Alexander Dragomir.”

The doors opened and she shined. Anya prowled in head held high, graceful as her name. Her smile was radiant, her happiness infectious. She walked arm in arm with Alec owning the moment and as soon as they reached the center of the floor he affectionately took her hand and twirled her around so everyone could see the magnificence of her gown then took a step back and applauded her along with the rest of the room… all save one. Anastasiya may have been smiling, her hands lightly pressing together to blend in with the other celebrants…but her eyes… her eyes were a fixated white hot stare with murderous intent. She wasn’t angry at Anya for enjoying the moment. It was jealousy consuming her. At that moment, she hated her purely for the fact that she was enjoying what Anastasiya never could, a pure wholesome moment with Alec, where she was the queen and he her king. She endured it as long as she could then stalked away to the ladies room furious.

“I’d check on your sire when you have a moment Alec.” Ysa’s voice advised in his earpiece. “She’s in the middeck bathroom.”

Once the applause had subsided, Alec dutifully escorted Anya to her table where she sat centered among her court. She knew Alec wouldn’t be able to sit with her the entire time but nonetheless had a chair set for him for when he could. Alec excused himself then set off to find Anastasiya. He opened up his enhanced senses, picking up the scent of her perfume, jasmine and lily. He lightly tapped on the door. “Stasi?”

She opened the door and scowled. “What?”

“I just wanted to see if you were alright? When I looked over and saw you had gone I became worried.”

“Worried for who, Alec?” Her tone was clearly threatening.

“You my heart.” His voice was calm and affectionate. “I thought maybe the entrance ceremony might have been a little much for you. Perhaps stirring up emotions and memories of yourself as a young girl back in Russia. Thoughts of your mother and siblings. Anya’s fortunate to have you as a cousin. Imagine how hard it must be for a child to celebrate such a special occasion and not have her mother present. I know how empathetic you are Stasi and assumed you were caught in the moment as well.”

Anastasiya held his gaze for a long few seconds then sighed, releasing her anger. “You know me so well Alec.” She offered softly as her expression calmed. She reached her arms out around him and drew him near. She could feel the blush of life causing his heart to beat and found comfort in the soft thrum against her breast. “Thank you.” She kissed him warmly.

He led her back to the table where Maksim was waiting. “Are you alright Anastasiya?” he asked her though his eyes were addressing Alec. “Is there anything I should be concerned with?”

“No sir.” Alec answered with his hand gently resting on top of Anastasiya’s knee. “Stasi felt a little emotional for Anya, her not having her mother here to celebrate and needed a moment. My lovely Anastsiya understands loss like few others sir. She was hoping she had done enough for the child to ease her sorrow and brighten this special day.”

“I see. I’m grateful my daughter has someone who understands her so well.”

“It’s true pa pa. Alec always seems to know how to bring out the best in me.”

“That he does Anastasiya. His addition to our family has been quite fortuitous.”

“Thank you Sir.”

A short time later Anya made her way over to the table where Alec was sitting with Anastasiya. She hugged her warmly. “Thanks for everything you’ve done cousin. Everything is amazing. I couldn’t have dreamed of a more spectacular birthday.”

“It’s nothing Anya. I’m happy to see you enjoying yourself.”

“Might I impose and ask to borrow Alec for a few minutes. The photographer would like to take some pictures.”

Alec could feel Anastasiya’s hand tightening over his own.

“Of course Anya.” Alec smiled. He leaned over and kissed Anastasiya on the cheek. “I’ll be back shortly. I’d very much enjoy a walk above deck afterward, if you’d be so kind as to accompany me, Stasi.”

She lightened her grasp. “Sounds nice Alec. Go on.” She agreed.

Maksim winked at him and off he went.

Anya and Alec danced so that she’d have some action shots in her ball gown and moved about the ship taking various poses, with differing backdrops. They stood near the bar, sat at her table along with her court and took others with the beauty of the clear night sky above them with the black rippling water beyond the rail beneath them. He was gone for nearly an hour before he returned to somewhat annoyed Anastasiya but a short walk in the cool air, along with soft words once again saw Anastasiya relax. Anya had smartly asked that the photographer take pictures of her and Anastasiya. Maksim had also found himself drawn into several photos.

The next planned event was the flats to heels ceremony. Eduard carefully replaced the simple but elegant flat shoe with the crystal studded  open toe spikes. Another rush of applause found Anya blushing, but reveling in the moment. The DJ asked her to choose a gentleman to share in her first dance as a woman and to no one’s surprise she motioned to Alec. The eruption of happy partygoers left little for Anastasiya to do but allow it. She did however make a spectacle of kissing him on the lips before releasing him. Alec, being an excellent dancer, led the young girl through the waltz masterfully. By the last stanza she had rested her head against his shoulder and clung tightly to him as if dreading the impending end to the song. But like most good things, end it did. She whispered a thank you in his ear and gently kissed his cheek in appreciation. Alec could feel the heat of Anastasiya’s stare boring a hole into him. He was careful, holding her just above her hip and lacing her fingers through his so as not to provoke a reaction from his sire. Even so, he could sense her displeasure. Her father must have had her ear though as she made no attempt to interfere with the dance. When it was over, Alec made sure to draw Anastasiya out to the center of the dance floor and activate his awe forcing everyone to notice them dancing and kissing. The attention served to soothe Anastasiya’s envy once again.

The party had moved above deck now into the nightclub atmosphere. Candles flickered on tables. Laser light and strobes cut through the darkness. Music was everywhere. The DJ played upbeat popular songs that grabbed the guests causing even those who didn’t want to dance to sway with the rhythm. Anya slipped away to the princess suite to change into her cocktail dress allowing Alec some time to dote on Anastasiya and reassure her jealousy that Anya was of no interest to him. They looked out over the rail across the harbor and could see the twinkle of city lights off in the distance. He wrapped his arms around her waist and affectionately kissed her neck. She purred happily in his embrace.

“I hope you’re enjoying yourself moye serdtse. I know I am. I much prefer this alone time with you to my recent activities. It’s a pleasant change from all the responsibilities put upon me.”

“Yes. I prefer you near as well. But I’m patient Alec. We have an eternity together. Even so, it’s nice to know you haven’t forgotten about me.”

“Never, my beautiful Anastasiya.”

She leaned her head back into his shoulder and melted into him.

When Anya returned she had exchanged her ball gown for the crystal blue cocktail dress Alec had bought her. She had her heels in her hand and danced her way across the deck toward the table Alec and Anastasiya had moved to.

“Dance with me.” She beamed at the couple.

Anastasiya eyed Alec who wasted no time in grabbing her hand and pulling her onto the floor. Alec was an excellent dancer, quite adept at having two dance partners. Anya was giddy as he grabbed and twirled her around. Even Anastasiya enjoyed the excitement of the three of them dancing together. The upbeat tempo would have seen her heart racing were it still beating.

“Hey Alec.” His earpiece came to life with Elena’s voice. “I asked the DJ to play a song for ya. Enjoy!”

“This one goes out to a very special lady here tonight.” The DJ announced. “You know who you are!”

Dance or die!” The song began and Alec’s eyes widened for a split second knowing what was to follow.

“Shakira! I love Shakira!” Anya yelled. “Who’s this for?”

Alec shrugged his shoulders.

“I don’t think I know this one.” Anastasiya said.

“It’s fairly new, very popular in the clubs right now.” Alec deflected, then the chorus hit.

[Chorus]

“And I’m crazy, but you like it, loca, loca, loca

You like that it ain’t easy, loca, loca, loca

I’m crazy but you like it, loca, loca, loca

Crazy but you like it”

Alec could hear snickering in his earpiece that became full on laughter once Dizzy Rascal began his verse.

“That girl is a nutter”

Even Alec couldn’t help but smirk. Fortunately Anastasiya didn’t put much thought into the lyrics. They danced through the music. Alec was glad when the final verse played and the song ended.

“Pure madness

Loca

That girl is a (Loca)

That girl is a (Loca)”

“Would you ladies excuse me for a moment.” He asked as he led them back to the table.

“Is everything ok Alec?” Anastasiya asked.

“Yeah. Just have to check with security for a second. Be right back.” He kissed her and walked off toward the top deck cabin.

He could still hear the laughter in his earpiece. Even Ysa wore a grin.

“Not funny Ellie.” Alec chided her.

“Yeah it was.” She grinned.

“I kinda agree.” Ysa smirked.

“You two are gonna be the death of me.”

“Yeah but you love us.”

Alec couldn’t help but smile. “Ok. So let’s pretend that I do. Would it be too much to ask of you to refrain from any more shenanigans? At least for tonight.”

“Ok boss.” Elena agreed.

“Thanks.”

“Better head back mijo. You don’t want her wondering where you snuck off to.”

“It’s fine. She’s with Anya now.”

“Even so, lindo.”

“Yeah. Ok.” Alec agreed and headed back toward the party deck.

“Alec!”

He heard a girl’s voice call out to him with some urgency. He turned to find Larisa, Anya’s best friend racing toward him, obviously worried.

“What’s wrong?” He asked, reading her expression.

“It’s Anya. She ran off in tears. I think Greg broke up with her.”

“Broke up with her? I thought she wasn’t allowed to date?”

Larisa made a face that clearly said, “Really?”

“Which way did she go?” he asked.

“Toward the back of the ship. You don’t think she’d jump, do you?”

“Over a boy? No, of course not. I’ll go talk to her.”

“Thanks Alec. She wouldn’t listen to me.”

Alec walked around the side of the deck cabin to the rear of the yacht which wasn’t being used for the celebration. There were a few lounge chairs set here that were unoccupied. No one was around except for one very upset Anya.

“Hey snowflake, you ok?”

She had tears in her eyes, trailing down her cheeks. Surprisingly her makeup held and didn’t smear with her crying.

“No. How could he? On my birthday!”

“It’s a terribly disrespectful thing to do, Anya. Is he here at the party?”

“Yeah! I’m so embarrassed Alec.” She turned away red faced with shame.

“Point him out to me. If it’ll make you feel better I can have him thrown overboard. Let him swim back.”

“He’s the one wearing the blue suit and… Wait. You’re kidding right?”

Alec didn’t answer.

“Tell me you’re kidding?”

Alec grinned and hugged her. “Just a joke. Unless…”

“Stop it Alec. Not funny.” She smacked at him but she wore a grin too. “Why do I get the feeling if I said yes, you really would have him thrown over.”

Alec shrugged his shoulders. “Call me protective over the people I love.”

“Why would he do this to me Alec? Why today?”

“Come here. Sit.” He led her to a lounge chair and sat next to her. “Boys are awful creatures, monsters even.”

“Not you. You’re no monster.”

Alec grinned. “Thank you Anya. But most of us have no idea how to treat a lady and fewer still know enough to appreciate it when we have someone special in our lives. But I promise when it’s right you’ll know. I did.” He said with his thoughts drifting dangerously to Stefania

“But what if I never find someone. What if no one thinks I’m special.”

“Nonsense. You’re a beautiful girl, Anya. Smart, thoughtful and kind hearted. Any man would be lucky to call you his own. Give it time, I promise the right guy exists. You’ll find him when you’re ready. Keep your father happy. Make it a few years.”

She chuckled. “Yeah. Thanks.”

“Maybe this will cheer you up. I was saving it for a special moment but now it seems is as special as we’ll get.” He reached into his jacket pocket and withdrew a slender jewelry box. “This is from me to you, to help you remember just how beautiful and perfect you are. Don’t ever let a boy make you feel less than.”

She opened the box and found a diamond snowflake pendant. Her eyes brightened with joy.

“My god Alec! I love it!”

“Here let me.” Alec placed the pendant around her neck and smiled. “There. How’s that?”

“Thank you Alec!. She kissed his cheek and threw her arms around him.

“Alec?!”

Anastasiya’s voice.

“Is this where you disappeared to? Running off with Anya? Perhaps she’s not so little as you say?” Alec could see the rage in her eyes and quiver of her lips.

“No Stasi, it’s not like that at all.” He tried to explain.

“Shlyukha. I knew you had eyes for my Alec. How dare you touch him like that!”

“Stasi no. I was just…” The girl was rightfully fearful.

Anastasiya stormed forward, glaring at Anya, fangs flashing murderously.

Anya screamed. The young girl shrunk back terrified.

Alec jumped up to intercept her.

“Stasi. Stop. Let me explain.”

“Move Alec. You’re in enough trouble as it is.” Her face was twisted with malice.

Alec took a step back guiding Anya behind him. Anastasiya was on top of him growling through her extended canines.

“I will not warn you again.” She menaced.

Alec held his sire’s rabid eyes with his own.

“Anya, Go dance with your uncle Maksim.”

Her eyes glazed for a moment as the power of his blood compelled her.

“Go now! Run!” He commanded. And she did. Alec held Anastasiya by her hips, locking her in place as the young girl bolted past.

“Let me go.” She demanded, staring into his eyes. Alec’s mind remained his own.

Anya had just reached the edge of the deckhouse when Alec yelled “Anya! Forget!”

The girl stopped for just a second, shook her head and ran off.

“You!” Anastasiya spit. Her left hand found his throat and pressed tightly into his vocal cords, forcing him silent. “That’s enough out of you.” Her nails had dug so far into his throat that blood began to trickle over her fingertips. She yanked him from his feet and into the air.

His earpiece fired up.

“I have a shot Alec. Do I take it?” Elena’s voice. She sounded worried.

He couldn’t speak. He could barely move enough to shake his head no.

“Do you intend to plead with me Alec? Hmm?”

Alec held her gaze.

“Alec!” His earpiece came alive again.

He shook his head again.

“Do you think, my heart, that if I threw you from this ship, you could find your way home before the dawn came for you?”

Alec couldn’t answer.

She reached into his shirt with her free hand then forced her fingers into his body. He grimaced in pain. “Perhaps I should pull your heart from your chest just like you did mine. It was smart to send her to my father. But it doesn’t save you.”

“Alec. I have a shot too.” Ysa’s voice. Raise your hand and we’ll take her out.”

He shook his head.

“Is there something you want to say, my love?” Anastasiya taunted him. “Do you wish to apologize, offer to make it up to me. What will you do to earn my forgiveness?”

His shirt was wet with blood, her hands were slick with his vitae. He didn’t seem afraid though. Elena who was watching the horrific scene play out through her rifle scope noticed it too. His eyes showed acceptance. Anastasiya had already taken everything he held dear from him. What was this unnatural existence worth? He saw no way to be with Stefania. So why go on?

“Alec.” Ysa’s calm voice came through his earpiece. “Don’t you give up mijo. You got this.”

“I’m taking the shot.” Elena said.

“Hold El.” Ysa replied.

Alec closed his eyes.

“Look at me Alec!” Anastasiya squeezed his throat.

He opened his eyes again and channeled all the affection he could through them. It didn’t matter that they were feelings for another woman. Anastasiya would never know.

“You want to say you’re sorry don’t you?”

Alec nodded.

She lowered him to the floor and pulled the hand from his abdomen. Her blood wet fingers slowly released his throat. “Choose your words carefully, my heart.”

“I’m sorry Stasi. I didn’t mean to upset you.” He choked out.

“You’ll have to do better than that.” She threatened.

“Anya was crying. Her boyfriend broke up with her.”

“Boyfriend?”

“Some kid named Greg. Larisa was worried for her and asked me to find her. I should have gone to you first. You would have handled it better than I could. I’m sorry.”

“Who are those people?”

“Her friends.”

“So the little tramp wasn’t trying to seduce you?”

“No.”

“Then why did she kiss you? Why was she hugging you?” Her anger was flaring up again.

“Because I convinced her she deserved better.”

“Better like you?” She suggested suspiciously.

“Better than me, Stasi. She has no idea what kind of monster I am.”

“You’re no monster Alec. You’re kindred.”

“Sometimes it feels like the same thing, the hunger, the beast… my uncontrollable desire for you. I know I don’t make it easy for you, Stasi, but I’m trying.”

Alec had hoped she’d soften. She didn’t. Instead she tensed. Anastasiya grabbed him by the jaw, twisting his head angrily to the side, exposing his throat while she violently pinned him against the rail.

“Perhaps I need to encourage you to try harder.” She seethed as she bit hard into his neck.

“Anastasiya!” Maksim’s voice boomed from the edge of the deckhouse. “Release him! Now!”

Her beast had come alive as his vitae filled her mouth. She growled viciously like a wolf whose meal had been interrupted by an intruder.

“I said let.. him.. go!” Maksim threatened as he closed the distance between them.

She pulled away glaring at her father. Her eyes were animalistic and red. She yanked Alec forward forcing him to the floor at her feet. He hit the ground hard and lay still.

“What have you done?” Her father hissed.

“Less than he deserved pa pa. Would it interest you to know that he…”

“It would not.” He cut her off. “Must you always be so possessive, Anastasiya. Alec has been nothing less than devoted to you and this is how you reward his affection?”

“But Anya.”

“Is a child.” He answered coldly.

“She…”

“A child!” He boomed. He paused to look over his shoulder to see if anyone else had wandered over. “What do you think would happen if some ill were to befall the girl on her birthday…huh… in front of all these guests, some of which are not exactly people. You did see Ivan aboard, yes? What if word of such indiscretions were to reach the prince’s ears. Do you think she’d react favorably? You may have forgotten, my dearest daughter,  but it was Alec who risked everything to protect you at Elysium.” He watched as Alec found his knees. “Would you have drained him if I hadn’t come? If I hadn’t realized little Anya had been mesmerized to dance with me with no memory of why she had run over to me?”

“No pa pa. Of course not. I love Alec. I didn’t think…”

“No you did not. That’s his job. At least it has been since…” He shook his head impatiently. “Are you hurt, Alec?”

“No sir. Nothing serious. Stasi would never…”

“Hmph!” He shook his head annoyed. “You’ve more faith in her than I do.” He glared at Anastasiya again. “Help him up.” Maksim could smell the blood and even in the dimly lit rear of the ship could discern the savage wounds she had inflicted upon him.

Anastasiya reached for Alec’s arm and pulled him to his feet. “I’m sorry Alec. I didn’t mean… I don’t know what came over me…” She sounded contrite but Alec could read the glint of satisfaction in her eyes.

“Help clean him up. You have a change of clothes, Alexander?”

“I do, sir. I’ll have Ysa bring my garment bag.”

“Splendid. Be quick about it though. You’ll be missed if you’re gone too long.”

“By whom?” Anastasiya demanded.

Maksim cocked an eyebrow. “You can’t be serious?” He asked in a low tone. “My beautiful Anastasiya, you would do well to exercise some decorum. My patience with you is tissue thin. Am I understood?”

“Yes pa pa.” She pouted.

“Good. I’ll see you both shortly.”

“Yes sir.” Alec answered.

Maksim eyed his daughter in admonishment, shook his head and departed. He crossed paths with Ysa just as he reached the deckhouse. She was carrying a black garment bag.

“Thank you Ysabelle.”

“Of course sir.”

Anastasiya met her a few steps from Alec.

“I’ll take it from here.”

Ysa hesitated for just a second. Her eyes found Alec before they drifted back to Anastasiya. “As you wish Miss Dragomir.” She replied, handing her the bag. She looked Alec over once more. “Probablemente deberías arreglar eso.” (You should probably fix that.) She said, rubbing her throat. “Te encontraré algo de comer.” (I’ll find you something to eat.)

“Thank you Ysa.”

“Meet me in the bathroom when you’re done.” She looked at Anastasiya, waiting for her to say something. When no words came she turned and left.

“What did she say?” Anastasiya asked.

“Just that I should mend any visible wounds and she’s going to find me something to eat. Probably a guard or two.”

“Oh.” Anastasiya answered stiffly.

“If that’s ok with you Stasi.”

She ran her fingers over the holes in his throat. “Perhaps a good idea. But Alec, do not keep me waiting for long.”

“I won’t.” He answered. She helped him out of his torn shirt and into a fresh clean one.

“Since when do you travel with clothes?”

“Since a tree branch punched a hole into my stomach in the Hamptons.”

“Clever.” She kissed his lips. “Go meet Ysabelle.”

“I’ll be fast.”

“Good. See that you are. I hate when you keep me waiting. It makes me crazy, Alec.”

“I know. I’m sorry.”

“I forgive you.” She kissed him again and walked away.

“I still have a shot Alec.” Elena said.

He grinned but shook his head.
